Kain

Kain
Kain had been born a high noble of the Nosgothic Court. Not much is known about his human life, but what is certain is that a conspiracy ended his life in his early thirties. A mere few days later he was resurrected as a vampire by Mortanius, the Guardian of the Pillar of Death. Setting Kain the task to find his own murderer, he released him back into the world. Eventually this would result in the justified deaths of all the remaining Pillar Guardians, including Mortanius himself, to cleanse the mechanism's corruption. Yet the central and most important one remained impure: the Pillar of Balance.

It was then that it became clear to Kain that he himself was its Guardian. Despite his initial revulsion to his vampiric state, Kain chose to refuse this last sacrifice, and to rule Nosgoth instead. His decision doomed the Pillars to eternal decay. In the many years that followed, Kain built his Empire by any means necessary, letting nothing and no one stand in his way.

Umah

Umah
Umah was an accomplished warrior ranking among Vorador's most beloved children; she had been tasked with guiding Kain when he woke up after a century of hibernation in Meridian. Both capable and headstong the woman profoundly caught his eye as she maneuvered him through the hordes of vampire hunters. Working together, they revealed the location of the Nexus Stone, an artifact important to the Hylden rule over the city.

Despite that, feeling she could not trust Kain's lust for power, Umah withheld the device from him and sought to end the Hylden Lord herself. Yet the plan failed. When Kain finally caught up with her, he found her thoroughly defeated by their mutual enemies. Barely alive, Umah pleaded with Kain to save her but he rejected, aggrieved over her betrayal, and swiftly ended her life.

The news of the circumstances of Umah's death severely damaged the alliance between Vorador and Kain.

Vorador

Vorador
Vorador, the Great Beast, bears not only the honour of being the oldest human vampire alive but also having been chosen as the first one ever to be created. Almost as unfathomably old as Janos Audron himself, he is the keeper of many secrets and arts, however lacking his sire's profound knowledge or insight into them. But it was his own craftsmanship with which Vorador aided the Ancients in their war against the Hylden ages ago, by forging the key to probably the most advanced and intricate magical device of its time; the Pillars of Nosgoth.

An eon later, having witnessed many wars, the extinction of his creator's race and the death of countless of his own progeny by human hands, Vorador had grown a world-weary and bitter creature. Keeping his lair deep in Termogent Forest, he and his kin mostly avoided contact with humans unless for hunting, as befits the predators they were. There, for centuries, Vorador took care of Janos' lifeless body in relative peace, until with the appearance of the fledgling vampire Kain on his doorstep he had to once more become the warrior he once had been - an adventure that eventually ended for him under the guillotine.

It is unclear how Vorador managed to escape his fate, but he did. Forming an alliance with Kain, now Keeper of the Pillar of Balance, he raised an army for the aspiring Emperor. Their line of conquests only ended a century later in Meridian.

Janos Audron

Janos
Janos Audron, the last existing member of an ancient winged race that reached its golden age at the dawn of mankind, survived thousands of years and countless enemies in his task as the tenth Guardian of the Pillars of Nosgoth - the keeper of the Soul Reaver. To keep the arts and knowledge of his lost kin alive, he was the first to make vampires of humans. Living in seclusion he hardly interfered with the affairs of the living, but still was hunted and feared. In the end the Sarafan Priesthood managed to break into Janos' mountain fortress and allegedly murdered the Ancient. By the time the human Kain was born, tales of the Lord and Father of Nightmares were nothing but myth.

Two centuries later, when the vampire Kain prowled the streets of Meridian, seeking to free the city from the grasp of the Hylden, he inexplicably found Janos there, alive but imprisoned inside a magical machine. Together they were able to escape, but during Kain's final battle against the Hylden Lord, Janos intervened to save the younger vampire's life and was hurled into a dimensional portal never to be seen again.
